  Position Title: Plant Engineer

Reports To: Facilities Manager

Department: Facilities

Position Summary:

Provide hands-on engineering in regard to the design, specification, fabrication and installation of production equipment and manufacturing support systems. Determine feasibility of designing new plant equipment and modifying existing facilities and equipment considering costs, available space, time limitations, company planning, and other technical and economic factors.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Lead, plan and direct the cost-effective and timely design, modification, adaptation and installation of equipment, controls, tooling and facilities.

2. Provide expert technical assistance and on-the-job training for issues relating to maintenance and operation of equipment, controls, tooling and facilities.

3. Develop or assist in the development of new and modified tooling and fabrication processes, including tool proofing.

4. Prepare or assist in the preparation of designs, specifications, bills of materials, engineering drawings, requisitions, etc.

5. Lead and/or actively participate in engineering projects, providing supervision and/or coordination of related engineering, machine shop and maintenance activities, testing and inspection, tryout and evaluation, and other functions as required.

6. Analyze and evaluate engineering problems, and develop and test for optimum solutions.

7. Investigate problems, suggestions and complaints related to tooling, controls, plant equipment/facilities, and take or recommend appropriate corrective action.

8. Assist in the selection of hardware and services to be purchased, and provide coordination and liaison coordination between the company and suppliers/contractors. This includes the responsibility for inspection of material and/or equipment in vendor plants, approvals, start-up procedures, etc.

9. Keep abreast of the state of fabrication, equipment, control and engineering technology, and investigate and report on important developments with potential value for the company.

10. Maintain appropriate and necessary records, logs, files and other formal documentation as required by the nature of assignments.

11. Prepare risk/return assessments for potential projects. Prepare cost estimates for assigned projects. Monitor and control project costs during execution.

12. Recommend the purchase of materials, including spare parts, for assigned projects.

13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

Education: Four-year college degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree is highly desirable).


Experience: Five (5) or more years engineering experience in a manufacturing industry.

Knowledge: Knowledge of design and operation of industrial machinery including electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and control systems. Knowledge of machine shop and maintenance methods and practices. Knowledge of construction practices. Knowledge material selection. Knowledge of measurement techniques including general dimensioning and tolerancing practices.

Skills: Communication (oral, written and listening). Mechanical. Interpersonal. Problem solving. Project management. Computer.

Abilities: Organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions. Operate a computer workstation and related hardware and software. Operate standard office equipment. Work as an effective team member. Provide and accept constructive criticism. Work under minimal supervision. Work under frequently changing priorities and deadlines. Work in a manufacturing environment. Travel throughout the plant to perform job duties. Reach around and over equipment to perform job responsibilities. See adequately to type, write, read and proof various documents. Feel, hear and see detail features and characteristics for tool/process development, troubleshooting and inspection of gauges, tools, equipment and product. Maintain hand-eye coordination sufficient for producing drawings and the fine adjustment of equipment, tools and gauges. Hold, manipulate and lift tooling and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. Maintain concentration for entire shift in order to complete job duties. Read, write, hear, understand and speak English fluently. Maintain hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate tools and equipment. Write procedures to operate and maintain equipment and facilities. Train, motivate and evaluate other employees in maintenance related subjects. Read and interpret customer and vendor specifications. Read and interpret GD&T symbols and dimensional tolerances on drawings and procedures.
